Monsoon 2022

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that monsoon rains this year will be higher than its forecast in April, at 103% of the benchmark long period average (LPA). The agency said the rains would be spatially well distributed over four broad areas and over much of the country. The revised forecast augurs well for summer (kharif) crops.

If the prediction turns out to be true, the higher supply of agricultural commodities could help offset the increased food inflation and boost exports of rice and many other commodities over the next few months. In its first April forecast, the IMD had predicted quantum rainfall at 99% of the LPA during the four-month monsoon season (June-September).

On the IMD’s announcement of the onset of monsoon over Kerala coast on Sunday, he said that more than 70% of the weather stations in the state reported adequate rainfall. In addition, the depth of the westerly winds was sufficient. Private weather forecaster Skymet on Monday alleged that the IMD announced the onset of monsoon prematurely.

Some more parts of Central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Karnataka, some parts of Konkan and Goa, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southwest Bay of Bengal, northeastern states and sub-Himalayan during next two-three days. Conditions are favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into West Bengal and Sikkim.

The IMD also said that La Nia conditions will strengthen the available moisture over the Indian subcontinent and are likely to continue during the monsoon months. Barring some parts of East, Central, North East and South Peninsula region where rainfall will be below normal, all other regions will receive minimum normal rainfall. In its forecast for June, the Meteorological Department has predicted ‘normal rainfall in the range of 92-108% of the LPA’.
