IMD Alert: Bihar is in the grip of a cold wave where the minimum temperature has been recorded at 10 degrees Celsius or below at many places. The Patna district administration has ordered all government and private schools up to class VIII to remain closed till January 11 due to severe cold.

IMD Alert: The cold is increasing with each passing day in the new year 2025. On Monday also, dense fog was seen in many states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, NCR, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Also, people are shivering due to the cold wave. Regarding the capital Delhi, the Meteorological Department has predicted cloudy skies and very light rain with thunder in the morning for Monday. The wind is expected to blow from the south-east at a speed of less than 4 km per hour in the morning. Mist and moderate fog are likely to prevail at most places today. Dense fog may prevail in some areas in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 18 and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.

Bihar is in the grip of a cold wave with many places recording minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or below. The Patna district administration has ordered all government and private schools up to Class VIII to remain closed till January 11 due to the intense cold. The Meteorological Department said that Motihari recorded the lowest temperature of 6.7 degrees Celsius in Bihar on Sunday. It was followed by 6.9 degrees Celsius in Saran, seven degrees in Dehri, 9.2 degrees Celsius in Samastipur, 9.8 degrees Celsius in Vaishali and 10 degrees Celsius in Patna. Dense fog prevailed during the day at some places in the state. According to the Meteorological Department, dense to very dense fog is likely at many places in the next two-three days. Due to severe cold in Patna, District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh on Sunday ordered all private and government schools up to Class 8, including pre-schools, Anganwadi centres and coaching centres, to remain closed till January 11.

Severe cold at many places in Haryana and Punjab

Severe cold continues to prevail at many places in most parts of Haryana and Punjab. The lowest minimum temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Narnaul on Sunday. According to the Chandigarh-based Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in Karnal, Haryana was 8 degrees Celsius, Ambala 8.3 degrees Celsius, Hisar 8.8 degrees Celsius, Bhiwani 8.9 degrees Celsius, Gurugram 9.3 degrees Celsius and Rohtak 10.3 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, was recorded at 8.4 degrees Celsius. After several days of clouds and fog, the city was sunny. At the same time, the government in Jharkhand has announced the closure of schools from kindergarten to class VIII from January 7 to 13 due to cold wave in the state. In view of the ongoing cold wave situation in the state, this order will be applicable to all categories of schools including government, aided, minority and private.

Snowfall in most parts of Kashmir including Srinagar

Fresh snowfall occurred in most parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius. The summer capital remained in the grip of severe cold wave and the maximum temperature was recorded at only 1.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The temperature has remained below two degrees Celsius for the last 48 hours. Officials said that the night temperature in the valley dropped significantly and it was recorded at minus 8.1 degrees Celsius in Kokernag town of South Kashmir. The temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, which was minus 2.2 degrees last night. Gulmarg, a tourist destination famous for skiing activities in North Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius, which was minus 2.2 degrees last night.
