In the last 36 years, the month of May was the coldest in the capital Delhi. IMD said on Wednesday that due to the highest rainfall in May, the average maximum temperature was recorded at 36.8 degree Celsius.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), rain and thundershowers are expected to continue over northwest India on Thursday. The Meteorological Department has also predicted heat wave conditions in Bihar and West Bengal during the next three days. Yellow alert has been issued for Delhi and Bengaluru for the coming days. According to IMD, there is a possibility of heavy rains in Karnataka till June 4 and a yellow alert has been issued in eight districts including Bengaluru.
Possibility of storm and rain in the coming days
The weather agency also said that due to another western disturbance, there is a possibility of storm and rain in the northern plains of India including Delhi in the coming days. In the last 36 years, the month of May was the coldest in the capital Delhi. IMD told on Wednesday that due to the highest rainfall in May, the average maximum temperature was recorded at 36.8 degree Celsius. Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the regional forecasting center of IMD, said that in May 1987, the average maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 36 degree Celsius.
Heat wave lasted only for two days in Delhi
Delhi recorded maximum temperature above 40 degree Celsius only on nine days in May and only two days there was heat wave in some parts of the city. According to IMD data, this is the fourth highest rainfall for the month after 165 mm in 2008, 144.8 mm in 2021 and 129.3 mm in 2002. The IMD also informed that after the rains in the national capital on Wednesday, a total of 184.3 mm of rain has been recorded in this pre-monsoon period.
Yellow Alert in Bengaluru
IMD has predicted heavy rains in Bengaluru till June 4 and Yellow Alert has been issued to eight districts including Bengaluru. Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu and Shivamogga districts are the districts where Yellow Alert has been issued. The agency has also predicted average rainfall in Udupi, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru and Vijayanagar districts.
