On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the country’s general budget, in which many big announcements have been made for taxpayers. In this, the government gave a big relief to the taxpayers by making income up to Rs 12 lakh annually tax free. But now from April 1, 2025, the Income Tax Department will have the legal right to view and access your social media accounts, personal email and bank accounts, online investment accounts, trading accounts and other things.
The new law is a problem for these taxpayers –
Let us tell you that the Income Tax Department is going to get new legal rights from April 1. Currently, Section 132 of the IT Act, 1961 allows officers to conduct searches and seize property and accounts. If they have evidence that a person has property or money that he hides while filing ITR, then the Income Tax Department can take action. Honest taxpayers will not have any problem in this.
Income Tax Department will get this special right –
At present, the Income Tax Department has certain powers that if there is evidence of a person having black money, then in such a situation, if the keys are not available, they can break the lock of any door, box or locker. Under the new Income Tax Bill, this power has also been extended to your computer system or virtual digital space.
Section 247 of the Income Tax Bill
According to Clause 247 of the Income Tax Bill, if an officer has reason to believe that a person has undeclared income or property which comes under the purview of the Income Tax Act, he can also break the lock of any door, box, locker, safe, cupboard or other instrument (virtual digital space). He can also gain access to any computer system or virtual digital space by overriding the access code.
