More than 35 lakh refund cases are pending with the Income Tax Department. This delay in issuing refunds is due to difficulties in matching and verifying the bank accounts of taxpayers. Tax officials are setting up a special call center to contact such taxpayers. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Nitin Gupta gave this information on Tuesday. He said that the department wants to deposit the refunds quickly in the correct bank accounts of the taxpayers.
Old demand notices visible
He said the department had made a technical change around 2011 and some old demand notices from before that time were now appearing in taxpayers’ accounts. Refund cases are getting delayed due to these old demand notices.
The department created a system for such cases
Gupta said that the department had started a unique demand management facilitation system for all such cases. Under this system an email is sent to the taxpayers. It is said that they will get a call from a given number in three days. During this phone call an attempt is made to resolve the issues of the taxpayers.
1.4 lakh cases solved in 1 year
He said that in the last one year, this Mysore-based call center has resolved 1.4 lakh cases. In these cases, taxpayers are given the option to accept the demand notice or challenge it.
Will expand to other cities also
Gupta said that this call center was initially working for Karnataka and four ranges of Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, North-West region. But now there are plans to expand it to other areas and cities.
