Indian Railway : New Update! Ex-gratia amount increased 10 times in train accidents, big decision of Railway Board

Indian Railway: Indian Railways has increased the ex-gratia amount in train accidents by 10 times than before. In case of train accident, Rs 5 lakh will be given to the deceased and Rs 2.5 lakh to the seriously injured.

Train Accident: The Indian Railway Board has increased the ex-gratia amount paid in case of death or injury in a train accident by 10 times. This amount was last revised in 2012 and 2013. The board said that now it has been decided to revise the amount to be paid to the families of dead and injured passengers involved in train accidents and untoward incidents.


According to a circular dated September 18, ex-gratia relief for road users has also been extended. Especially those people who have become victims of railway accidents due to manned level crossing accidents. This new rule has come into effect from September 18.

How much ex-gratia amount in train accident

According to the Railway Board circular, families of those killed in train and manned level crossing accidents will now get Rs 5 lakh, while those seriously injured will be given Rs 2.5 lakh. A person with minor injury will be given an amount of Rs 50 thousand. Earlier this amount was Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 5,000.

Ex-gratia amount in different incidents

The circular further states that Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 50,000 and Rs 5,000 will be given to those killed, seriously injured and moderately injured in any untoward incident. Whereas in the previous ex-gratia scheme, this amount was Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 5,000. Let us tell you that unpleasant incidents include crimes like terrorist attack, violent attack and robbery in train.

Ex-gratia amount on hospitalization

In case of train accidents, additional ex-gratia relief will be announced for seriously injured passengers who are hospitalized for more than 30 days. Rs 3,000 per day will be released on the date of end of every 10 day period or holiday, whichever is the case. In case of serious injury, Rs 1,500 will be released per day for six months.

They will not get the amount

Additionally, Rs 750 per day will be released at the end of every 10-day period for the next five months of hospitalization or the date of discharge, whichever is earlier. The Board has clarified that no ex-gratia relief will be admissible to road users “in case of accidents at unmanned crossings, trespassers, persons electrocuted by OHE (Over Head Equipment)”.
