Who will be responsible if goods are stolen?

When passengers are traveling in the reservation compartment, it is the responsibility of the TTE and the coach attendant to ensure that no suspicious person or social element should enter it. In such a situation, if any suspicious person enters the coach and steals the goods. In such a situation, the entire responsibility does not lie with the Railways. There is no such rule from the Railways side. But the Consumer Court, in its two decisions, has ruled in favor of the passenger regarding such occasions.

Chandigarh Consumer Court had given the decision

Last year, Chandigarh Consumer Court had given verdict in favor of the passenger in a case of theft of luggage from the train. The court had held the Railways responsible for the theft of passengers’ luggage. Chandigarh Consumer Commission has said that if the luggage of passengers is stolen in the reservation coaches of the train, then the Railways will have to bear the full compensation. In the incident of snatching in the train, the Consumer Commission had held the Railways responsible and ordered to refund the full price of the goods to the passenger. Along with this, the passenger will also have to pay compensation of Rs 5000.
