In view of the increasing use of internet in the present times, Indian Railways is playing a leading role in launching digital efforts to realize the mission of Digital India with its own initiative. Railways have registered a significant increase in passenger amenities through the use of information technology.
Railways are providing pleasant travel experience to the passengers by making remarkable and useful changes in the National Train Inquiry System (NTES) and Passenger Reservation System. Indian Railways is leading the way in the digital era by providing Wi-Fi network connectivity with the objective of providing internet facility at railway stations to the passengers.
Keeping in view the convenience of the passengers and the use of internet, free high speed Wi-Fi facility has been made available at 419 railway stations under North Western Railway. North Western Railway aims to provide free high speed Wi-Fi facility at all 586 stations.
The number of stations with wi-fi facility on North Western Railway are as follows –
- Jaipur Division: 89 Stations
- Jodhpur Division: 120 Stations
- Ajmer Division: 86 Stations
- Bikaner Division: 124 Stations
The responsibility of establishing this remarkable initiative of Digital India on the entire Indian Railways has been given to the Railway Mini Ratna undertaking “RailTel”. RailTel is providing high level Wi-Fi facility in the name of RailWire through its continuous and tireless efforts. RailTel has so far installed this facility at more than 6070 railway stations across the country.
Awareness campaigns are conducted by North Western Railway to increase the reach of Wi-Fi facility available at stations to maximum number of passengers and general public. Apart from this, information about the use of Wi-Fi facility is also provided to the passengers through social media, frequent announcements at stations, hoardings, banners and posters.
The target is to start Wi-Fi facility at all railway stations.
- RailWire, provided by RailTel, is included in the world’s largest and fastest Wi-Fi network. Indian Railways aims to provide high speed free Wi-Fi facility at all its railway stations (except halts) which is being worked on.
- The identity of the stations established on the Indian Railways is that there is a continuous social movement here. The increasing step of modernization and the manifold increase in the use of smart phones has given an important place to the ‘Digital India’ campaign.
