No need to buy tickets
According to the rules of Indian Railways, if your child is between one and four years old, then you do not need to buy a ticket for him/her. Reservation is also not required for children of this age. They can travel comfortably in the train without a ticket. But if your child is between 5 and 12 years old, then you will have to buy a half ticket for him/her. But, in this half ticket, the child will not get a separate seat. You will have to make him/her sit with you. If you want the child to get a separate seat, then you will need to buy a full ticket for him/her.
You will have to pay the full fare for a 13-year-old child
If you want a seat for a child between the ages of 1 and 5, you will have to pay the full fare for the ticket. Some time ago, Indian Railways introduced the facility of special seats (shishu berths) for children in the AC third class coach of the Lucknow Mail. So, if you are planning to travel with your child in this train, do check the current rules. If a 13-year-old child is travelling with you in the train, you will have to buy his/her full ticket. There is no rule of half ticket for children of this age.
You may have to pay a fine as per the rules
If you buy a full ticket, the child will be given a separate seat by the railways. If you buy half the ticket by hiding the age of the child, then if caught, you may have to pay a fine as per the rules of Indian Railways. Many times people try to save money on the ticket by hiding the real age of their children. Indian Railways has made a rule that while booking tickets for children, parents will have to show some important documents. These documents include documents like the child’s birth certificate or Aadhaar card.
