ITR Filing 2025: The new financial year has started and now the countdown to the most important task for taxpayers has started. Taxpayers have to file Income Tax Return (ITR) by July 31. ITR filing for assessment year 2025–26 may start soon. If you want to file returns on time and without any mistake, then it is very important to keep some important documents ready from now on. Here is the complete checklist of documents that you must have before filing ITR.

1. PAN and Aadhaar card

PAN is required to file income tax return. Also, now it is mandatory to link PAN and Aadhaar. Your identity is verified through Aadhaar.

2. Form 16 (for salaried people)

This document is given by the company which contains information about your salary and tax deducted. It has two parts – Part A (TDS details) and Part B (salary breakup). The company has to submit this Form 16 by 15 June every year.

3. Form 26AS and AIS (Annual Information Statement)

Form 26AS is like your tax passbook which contains information about TDS, advance tax and big transactions. AIS contains details of all your sources of income – like salary, interest, dividend, shares etc. Be sure to cross check your TDS and income with this.

4. Bank account details

Keep information about all your active bank accounts. Especially it is important to fill the IFSC code and account number correctly so that there is no problem in tax refund.

5. Interest certificates

Take a statement of interest received on savings account, FD, RD from the bank or post office. This income is counted in Income from Other Sources.

6. Investment proofs (for Tax Deductions)

Keep the necessary documents to get exemption under section 80C, 80D etc. like – life insurance premium receipts, PPF, ELSS, children’s fees, home loan documents and health insurance receipts.

7. Home loan and property documents

Take a certificate from the bank for interest on home loan and if you are claiming HRA, then keep the rent receipt or agreement.

8. Capital gain statements

If you have sold shares, mutual funds or property, then collect the sale-purchase receipts and statements related to it.

9. Foreign income and property (if applicable)

If you have earned money or have property abroad, then it is mandatory to give its information.

10. Freelance or business related income

Keep profit-loss statements, GST returns, and professional invoices.

11. Advance tax and self-assessment tax receipts

12. Last year’s ITR copy and old tax notices

When will ITR filing start?

CBDT’s new ITR forms are released in April and the portal may open this month. But most salaried people file only after June, because Form 16 is available to them by June 15. So if you also want to file returns quickly and correctly, then do not forget to keep these documents ready in advance.
