ITR Filing: How to revise income tax return online, know step by step process

ITR Filing:  If you are also revising ITR, then you have to keep in mind that you have to verify it.

ITR Filing: For those taxpayers whose accounts are not to be audited, the deadline (ITR Last Date) for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) is 31st July. According to the website of the Income Tax Department, till now i.e. till June 29, 2024, 13792552 ITRs have been filed. 12905361 returns have been verified and the department has also processed 3937293 ITRs. Although every taxpayer takes utmost care while filing income tax returns, but still many people make mistakes. Mistakes like mentioning wrong bank account number, forgetting to declare interest income or claiming wrong deduction etc. are usually seen more. If you have also entered any information wrongly in ITR, then you do not need to panic. You can easily correct it.

According to Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, if an income tax payer finds out after filing income tax return that he has made a mistake or has given wrong information while filing the ITR return, then he can correct his mistake. He can do this by filing a revised ITR. Therefore, if you have made a mistake while filing ITR, you should immediately file a revised ITR. The special thing is that you can revise the return as many times as you want before the deadline for filing the return expires.

Verification is necessary

If you are also revising the ITR, then you have to keep in mind that you have to verify it. If you do not verify the revised ITR, then the Income Tax Department will not accept it and your revised ITR will be invalid.

Correct the mistake online like this

  • Go to the Income Tax Department website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
  • Go to the e-file menu and click on the rectification link.
  • Here select ‘Order/Intimation to be rectified’ and the assessment year from the dropdown list. After this click on Continue.
  • Now select the request type from the dropdown list. Such as Tax Credit Mismatch Correction Only or Return Data Correction. Select the one that applies to you.
  • After updating the information, click on Submit.
  • A success message will appear and you will also receive a mail related to it on your registered email ID.

Check the status online

You can also get information whether the amendment you have made to correct the mistake in your ITR has been done or not. For this, you will have to go to the official website of the Income Tax Department https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/. Then go to the My Account menu and click on ‘View e-Filed Returns/Forms’. Here select the rectification status from the dropdown list and click on submit. The status will appear in front of you.
