Income Tax Return Filing: Most taxpayers are expecting the deadline for filing income tax returns to be extended. Due to problems on the income tax website, incidents like landslides, taxpayers and associations are demanding the government to extend the deadline. The All-India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) is demanding the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns for assessment year 2024-25 by one month. Associations are demanding the date for filing income tax returns to be 31 August 2024.

Taxpayers’ demand – the date for filing income tax returns should be extended

In a memorandum, AIFTP national president Narayan Jain and Direct Tax Representation Committee chairman S M Surana said floods in several states have severely affected the return filing process. Landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have further aggravated these difficulties, they said.

There is a problem on the taxpayers’ site

There have also been claims of persistent problems with the income tax portal and software. There are difficulties in downloading and verifying forms on the income tax website. Apart from this, he said that the process of paying tax after self-assessment through banks and downloading challans is time-consuming. There is little chance of the deadline for filing ITR being extended beyond July 31, 2024.

Can the deadline be extended?

If you are expecting an extension of the ITR filing deadline, you may be disappointed. The July 31 deadline is unlikely to be extended, as there has been no formal announcement from the Finance Ministry. Despite speculation about the extension and a surge in ITR filings leading up to the deadline, the Income Tax Department has not issued any official statement regarding the extension.
