NEW DELHI: The counting of votes for 81 assembly seats is underway in all 24 district headquarters in Jharkhand. The state went to polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20. In Jharkhand, the BJP is up against the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance which includes Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. A party/alliance would need to win 41 seats to form a government in the state.

Here is a look at the key highlights from the state —
- At 11.00 am, the Congress-JMM alliance was leading on 43 seats, while the BJP was ahead on 27 seats. A party/alliance needs 41 seats to form a government in the state.
- Congress-JMM emerges stronger in southern and eastern parts of the state, BJP doing well in the west and pockets of central Jharkhand.
- The Others, which include AJSUP and JVM(P), may well emerge as the kingmakers. The JVM(P) was leading on 4 seats, AJSUP was leading on 1, while the Others were leading on 6 seats.
- At 10.00 am, the BJP was ahead on 29 seats, while the Congress-JMM alliance was leading on 41 seats. The Others were ahead on 11 seats.
- An hour into the counting of votes, BJP surged ahead to give a close fight to the Congress-JMM-RJD alliance. At 9.15 am, the BJP was ahead on 34 seats, while the alliance of Congress-JMM-RJD was leading on 37 seats.
- Early trends indicate a healthy lead for the alliance of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the Congress. At 8.30 am, the Congress-JMM alliance was leading on 33 seats, while the BJP was leading on 16 seats.
- Jharkhand is the third BJP-ruled state after Haryana and Maharashtra that went to polls this year.
- While the JMM has fielded candidates in 43 seats, the Congress and the RJD are fighting for 31 and seven seats, respectively. The ruling party has fielded its candidates in 79 out of the 81 seats. BJP has not fielded any candidate against All Jharkhand Students’ Union’s (AJSU’s) Sudesh Mahto, and is supporting a candidate in the remaining one constituency.
- The exits polls have indicated a marginal advantage to the JMM-led alliance and have pointed towards a hung Assembly.
- According to the Election Commission of India, the approximate voter turnout for all the 81 Assembly constituencies across the five phases was 65.17 per cent as compared to the 66.53 per cent recorded in the 2014 elections.
- In the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, BJP had bagged 11 seats out of 14 in the state.
