New Delhi: The situation in Jammu and Kashmir has been worsening with every passing day. With the internet services being shut down to the Amarnath Yatra being called off, the question of ‘what will be’ is looming the minds of many. In the most recent development, J&K has been declared as a Union Territory with Legislative Assembly.

In the wake of the situation, a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to be held. With speculations and reports coming in every hour, confusion has arisen about the entire issue. While politicians suspect the scrapping of Article 35A and Section 370, it also being alleged that the Valley is again on the hit-list of terror outfits. As confusion about the entire scenario is escalating, here is everything you need to know about the issue.

  • Rajya Sabha to take up the issue: Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution to scrap Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir was declared as a Union Territory. The Rajya Sabha Chairman had earlier announced that all Listed business in the house has been suspended and that a discussion on the issue of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir will be held today.
  • Section 144 CrPC imposed in J&K: Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5. Section 144 prohibits the assembling of more than four people in an area. The administration said, “It should be noted that there will be no curfew in place as reported in a section of the media. ” Soon after the announcement, political reactions started coming in. From Mehbooba Mufti to Omar Abdullah, all the politicians took to Twitter to share their sentiments about the ongoing situation.

  • Politicians allege ‘house arrest‘: Politician Omar Abdullah’s tweet read, “I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight and the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us. ” Former Chief Minister of J&K and member of the People’s Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti said, “How ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people and their voices are being muzzled in J&K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India.”

  • Amarnath Yatra curtailed over speculations of terrorist attacks: On August 2, the Jammu and Kashmir administration issued an advisory and called off the Amarnath Yatra. In the advisory, the administration asked the visitors and tourists to leave the valley at the earliest. The advisory was issued after security personnel received information about probable terror attacks. The advisory read, “Keeping in view the latest intelligence inputs of terror attacks, with specific targeting of the Amarnath Yatra, and given the prevailing security situation in the Kashmir Valley, in the interest of safety and security of the tourists and Amarnath yatris, it is advised that they may curtail their stay in the Valley immediately and take necessary measures to return as soon as possible.”
  • Speculations of terrorist attacks: The issue gained momentum after the Director-General of Police (DGP) J&K Police and the Army held a joint press briefing on August 2. In the briefing, it was announced that the arms and ammunition had been recovered along the route of the Amarnath Yatra. The authorities also announced that the security forces had found weapons, explosives, an American M-24 (sniper) rifle and a Pakistan-made mine.
