Lenovo confirms gaming phone under Legion brand, launch likely in July

The Lenovo Legion gaming smartphone has been in the rumour mill for quite some time and said to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor under the hood.

Lenovo has confirmed it will launch a gaming smartphone under the Legion brand, popular for its gaming laptops. There has been a rather huge speculation on the company’s next move to revive the smartphone business after its dismal performance. The Chinese company has said on Weibo that its Legion gaming smartphone is real and will arrive in July. Lenovo also gave away the first look of the smartphone wherein its key design has been confirmed.

On Weibo, Lenovo wrote “Waiting for a long time, see you in July” (translated from Mandarin) along with the logo of its Legion line-up. While the first poster does not show what the smartphone will look like, a previously leaked render does. The Lenovo Legion smartphone will have a design that has leaked previously in renders. There will be pop-up cameras that will stick out from the side instead of the top edge. This implies Lenovo’s upcoming gaming smartphone is practically meant to be used horizontally.

Apart from the fact the cameras of the Lenovo’s Legion phone are oddly placed, Lenovo will offer optimisations on the camera app. The rear cameras on the smartphone are likely to sit at the dead centre of the panel, unlike the ones we have seen on a plethora of other smartphones. There is no reason given by Lenovo to why the rear cameras are at the centre. The one we could possibly think of is because when you hold the phone horizontally, you will tend to obstruct the top and bottom portions of the smartphone from its back. Hence, placing the rear camera towards the top would not have made sense to the rest of the smartphone’s design.

Previous rumours have suggested the Lenovo’s Legion smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor for high gaming performance and support 5G. The company is already claiming the smartphone will break the 600,000 scores on AnTuTu and outperform any other smartphone with the same processor. There will be a display with a higher refresh rate on the smartphone, as well. Moreover, the company is expected to go for a better liquid cooling technology — possibly the one that has not been used to date. Lenovo’s Legion gaming smartphone will also 90W fast charging, which could be the highest charging rate ever.
