The levying of penalty in the income tax returns’ new website is probably a technical glitch, said the IT department’s public relations officer Leo.

When asked whether the fine levied will be refunded, Leo said that the grievances cell of IT department have not received any complaint yet.
“Maybe people are waiting for the technical problem to be solved. There have been issues since the launch on June 7. But the department has taken it up seriously and is working towards resolving them,” he told mathrubhumi.com.
He clarified that since the last date to file ITR is extended to September 30, no one will have to pay any fine if they file the return on time.

The officers at the Income Tax department also told mathrubhumi.com that they were unaware of the glitch. “There is no way that you will be fined at this point,” an officer said.
