Items that increase immunity, packaged food, digital services, gold loans and appliances are at the top of the consumer shopping list.
The lockdown has changed the shopping and consumption habits of the Indian consumer. They like to shop in a convenient and clean manner. The top priority of Indian consumers is their health and cleanliness. According to Bloomberg’s news, consumer shopping lists include immunity enhancing items, packaged food, digital services, gold loans and appliances.
Dabur and The Himalayan Drug Company have benefited from consumers giving priority to immunity boosters. Sales of immunity boosters like their Chyawanprash have increased. Chyawanprash sales grew by 283 percent and honey by 39 percent. During April-June, Chyawanprash sales of some of the companies have increased by 700 percent.

Packaged food and online services demand increased
Packaged food is also gaining popularity among consumers. Sales of packaged food from companies like Nestle have increased. Nestle India’s revenue growth was 10.7 percent in the March quarter. Its Instant Maggi Noodles have been sold heavily. Sales of Parle-G biscuits from Parle Products also recorded record sales during April and May. Government agencies and NGOs distributed these biscuits to the needy during lockdown.
Britannia Industries also benefited from the increased sales of packaged food. The demand for online services also increased a lot. Especially online education apps and classes. The number of new students using education startup BYju’s has increased. According to its parent company Think and Learn, during April-June, the number of students joining BYJu’s has tripled.
Increase in demand for gold loan and appliance
According to Flipkart, the laptop search saw double increase. With this, the demand for gold loan has also increased considerably. People are taking advantage of gold being expensive. People are using it to pay off old debts. The lockdown forced people to stay at homes. Due to this, the trend of cooking in the house also increased. For this reason, the sales of appliances used for cooking and household appliances have increased.
