In the year 2020, when the worldwide lockdown was imposed due to the coronovirus epidemic, the prices of crude oil fell. From May 2020 onwards, LPG subsidy has stopped in many areas, barring a few that are remote and away from LPG plants.
How much does the government spend on subsidies?
The government’s expenditure on subsidies stood at Rs 3,559 during the financial year 2021. In the financial year 2020, this expenditure was Rs 24,468 crore. Actually this is under the DBT scheme, which was started in January 2015, under which the customers have to pay the full amount for the non-subsidized LPG cylinder. At the same time, the subsidy money is refunded to the customer’s bank account on behalf of the government. Since this refund is direct, the scheme is named DBTL.
