LPG Subsidy: With rising inflation, the common man is now expecting the central government to give back the subsidy on the purchase of domestic gas (LPG) cylinders.
The central government has recently cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively. This is the reason why many are expecting that the government may resume the subsidy on LPG subsidy.
At present, the price of LPG cylinder is going to reach 1000 rupees. According to the government’s internal assessment, consumers are ready to pay Rs 1000 for a cylinder. However, the central government is considering selling cylinders in two ways. One way would be for the government to continue selling LPG cylinders without any subsidy. Secondly, the government may offer subsidy on the purchase of LPG cylinders to select customers.
Who will be eligible for LPG Subsidy?
As of now, the government has not taken any decision related to LPG subsidy. However, reports suggest that the government may subsidize customers with an annual income of less than Rs 10 lakh. Also, the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana can get subsidy on LPG purchase. The objective of the Ujjwala scheme is to provide free LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. This scheme was launched on 1st May 2016.
The central government stopped giving direct subsidy to customers on LPG gas cylinders from May 2020, at a time when fuel rates had fallen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, there was a sharp drop in international oil and gas prices. However, the government continues to subsidize indirectly. The government’s expenditure on subsidies during FY21 was Rs 3,559 crore. Whereas in the financial year 2020 this expenditure was Rs 24,468 crore.
