Road Tax Waiver in Maharashtra: With the decision of Maharashtra Government, more than 11.41 lakh vehicles registered in the state are likely to benefit. These include tourist taxis, private service and passenger vehicles, school and luxury buses, goods vehicles and other excavators.
New Delhi. Maharashtra government has given a big relief to the transport sector devastated by Coronavirus Pandemic. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has decided to provide financial relief to the severely affected transport sector during the 5 months due to the epidemic and lockdown. The state government will waive annual road tax paid by all transporters and commercial vehicle owners in Maharashtra from April 1 for six months. This decision of the Maharashtra government is expected to benefit more than 11.41 lakh vehicles registered in the state. These include tourist taxis, private service and passenger vehicles, school and luxury buses, goods vehicles and other excavators.
The move is expected to be approved in the state cabinet meeting on Wednesday. While the state exchequer will have a burden of Rs 700 crore. The government is justifying the proposal on the basis that the transport industry is facing unprecedented challenges due to the Kovid-19 epidemic and needs booster dose to run it.
According to a Times of India report, this will be the second major economic dose handed by the government as part of measures to revive the economy. It earlier announced a special grant of Rs 4,000 for 12 lakh tribal families.
Maharashtra, the fifth state waived road tax
, is lobbying for transporters’ unions to stay in the state during the first few months of lockdown and with the ban on movement of vehicles still banned. Maharashtra will be the fifth state to waive road tax amid epidemic. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Haryana have already announced similar exemptions.
Private car owners will not get exemption
This decision of the government will not give exemption to private car owners, who pay a one-time tax while buying a car. Those who are eligible, but do not avail in the six-month period, will have a 50 percent discount option for 2020-21.
