A total of Rs 9940 crore has been released by the Centre so far under the Mission.
Out of the Rs 9940 crore released to 99 smart cities by the Centre, cities in Maharashtra have received the largest share of funds followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu under the Smart Cities Mission, according to government data.
The Centre has so far released Rs 9939.20 crore to states for smart cities out of which Rs 1378 crore have been disbursed for cities in Maharashtra such as Pimpri, Nashik, Thane, Solapur, Nagpur, Kalyan Dombivali, Aurangabad and Pune.
Madhya Pradesh has received Rs 981 crore for works being executed in Kavaratti, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Sagar, Satna and Ujjain.
Tamil Nadu has so far received Rs 848 crore for cities such as Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruppur, Salem, Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Chennai and Erode.
Rajasthan with four cities– Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota and Ajmer has so far received Rs 784 crore. Andhra Pradesh, whose four cities were selected, received a central assistance of Rs 588 crore, Uttar Pradesh with 10 cities received Rs 547 crore and Gujarat, whose six cities were chosen, got Rs 509 crore, the data indicated.
Delhi’s New Delhi Muncipal Corporation (NDMC) has received Rs 196 crore so far.
The total proposed investment in these smart cities is Rs 2.03 lakh crore.
This information was part of the responses to unstarred questions asked in Parliament. “99 cities have so far been selected. The Central government has released Rs 9939.20 crore to states for smart cities,” this was the response to the question on the amount of funds released so far under the Smart Cities Mission.
To a question on whether most of the funds released under the Mission have been spent, the response was “the progress of implementation depends on the round of selection as it takes around 15-18 months from the date of selection of a smart city to call tenders. As many as 2997 projects worth Rs 1.40 lakh crore have been identified for implementation by cities. Work is ongoing or completed for 716 projects worth Rs 21,873 crore.”
The 100 Smart Cities Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015. Under the mission, the Centre allocates Rs 500 crore to each of the cities for implementing projects proposed by it. This amount is matched with a grant of the same amount by the respective state.
