Medicine Price Hike: The prices of essential medicines may increase across the country. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has approved a price hike of up to 50 percent. The NPA says that the purpose of this step is to ensure the availability of medicines for public health needs.

Medicine Price Hike: The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has approved a 50 percent increase in the prices of 11 formulations of eight medicines. NPPA says that its aim is to always make medicines available for public health needs. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, this decision has been taken in a meeting under Para 19 of the Drugs (Price Control) Order, 2013. So that people can get essential medicines in the market at a reasonable price. The demand for price increase from the drug manufacturing companies was going on for a long time.

Pharmaceutical companies say that the cost of making medicines has increased. There are many ingredients which have become very expensive. Therefore, the prices of medicines have been increased. These include medicines used in the treatment of asthma, glaucoma, thalassemia, tuberculosis and mental health.

The prices of these medicines will increase

The medicines whose prices will increase include benzyl penicillin 10 lakh IU injection, atropine injection 0.6 mg/ml, streptomycin powder for injection (750 mg and 1000 mg), salbutamol tablets (2 mg and 4 mg) and respirator solution (5 mg/ml), pilocarpine 2 percent drops, cefadroxil tablet 500 mg, desferrioxamine 500 mg for injection and lithium tablet 300 mg. Earlier in the year 2019 and 2021 also, the prices of medicines were increased by 50 percent.

What are essential medicines

This list includes those medicines which are useful for most people. The price of these medicines is controlled by the government. The companies of these medicines can increase the price by only 10 percent in a year. Anti-cancer medicines are also included in this list.

Prices had increased from painkillers to antibiotics

At the same time, the prices of 800 medicines have increased from April 1. The list of these medicines included painkillers, antibiotics and anti-infection medicines. The prices of medicines under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) had increased by a record 12 per cent and a massive 10 per cent year-on-year last year and in 2022.
