Mumbai Airport Maintenance: As part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) monsoon contingency plan, both runways – RWY 09/27 and 14/32 will remain temporarily non-operational for pre-monsoon maintenance on May 2 and repairs in the meantime The work will go on. The temporary closure will be from 11 am to 5 pm. All operations will resume as usual from 5 pm onwards on 2nd May.

This maintenance is an annual practice

Scheduled temporary runway closure is an annual exercise and a contingency plan will help maintain operational continuity and ensure passenger safety. As one of the world’s busiest single runway airports, CSMIA sees approximately 900 flight movements each day. The airport has a network of runways, taxiways and aprons spread over approximately 1,033 acres.

Why is this maintenance work necessary?

The annual exercise of runway maintenance work involves experts inspecting the runway surface for microtexture and macrotexture wear and tear that may occur due to day-to-day operations and helps to strengthen the airside strip. Officials said CSMIA has strategically and meticulously planned the runway maintenance work in collaboration with its multiple stakeholders including airlines and aviation authorities.

Maintenance work is part of the airport’s monsoon contingency plan.

During the four crucial months of monsoon, Mumbai airport handles around 92,000 ATMs, which transport around 10 million passengers to India’s financial capital. The maintenance work is part of the airport’s Monsoon Contingency Plan, which has been prepared to respond to and mitigate any potential problems that may arise due to inclement weather in the city during the monsoon season, thus protecting all airlines and passengers The airport operates round the clock, ensuring business continuity and assurance, a statement said.
