About 200 people travel by Indian Railways every day. The Tatkaan Reservation Scheme of Indian Railways was introduced in 1997 for a short time to protect against brokers. At the same time, Tatkal ticket booking service is now available in all trains.
Tatkal ticket booking facility is given by Railways for all classes. Tatkal ticket booking can be done in case the train ticket is not confirmed or in case of emergency. According to the rules of the Railways, depending on the capacity of the coach, not more than 30 percent of the seats can be used for Tatkal ticket booking.
On the other hand, out of the total berth capacity of about 15.14 lakh berths or seats every day, about 3.05 lakh seats or berths are available for premium and tatkal ticket booking, which is about 20.16 per cent of the total seats. At the same time, the Railways have been directed to implement the Tatkal scheme in those passenger trains, whose average utilization during the last financial year was 60 percent more.
Tatkal ticket booking time
Tatkal booking starts one day prior to the day of travel i.e. for travel on 3rd of any month, booking will open on 2nd. However, the day of travel is counted as the day of chart preparation.
In other words, Tatkal booking system is opened one day before the originating station against the train timings. Whereas Tatkal booking for AC class starts at 10:00 AM and for Sleeper at 11:00 AM.
How many Tatkal tickets can I book at a time?
For Tatkal tickets, 4 passengers can be booked with one PNR. At the same time, a person is allowed to book only 2 tickets (either sleeper or AC) per day from 8 am to 12 noon on an IP address.
Further, only one Tatkal ticket booking is allowed if booked through IRCTC website. Tatkal booking is allowed in all classes except First AC.
