The government is going to bring a satellite based toll collection system. Approval has also been given by the government on this. It is believed that after the arrival of this new system i.e. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), the journey from the toll will become easier than before. After the announcement of this system, many people are confused whether Fastag will be discontinued or will continue.
Will Fastag be discontinued?
Crisil has clarified that even after the arrival of GNSS system, Fastag will not be replaced, but it is possible that with time Fastag and GNSS system will run together.
Will toll tax not be levied on 20 km?
No toll tax will be deducted for a journey of up to 20 km per day on any highway or expressway in the country. On the other hand, if someone travels a distance of more than 20 km, then toll tax will be charged from the first kilometer.
How will the GNSS system work?
Satellite and on-board unit installed in the vehicle will be used for toll connection through GNSS system. This system will monitor the vehicle with the help of a network of satellites and communicate with the on-board unit. This software will calculate the toll. For this, when and where is this vehicle going and will match the coordinates of the toll roads. At the same time, a digital wallet will be attached to the on-board unit and money will be deducted from the wallet as soon as it leaves the toll road.

Where was it trialed?
GNSS based toll tax has also been trialed. It has been trialed on Bengaluru-Mysore route of NH-275 in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar route of NH-709 in Haryana.
