New Visa Rules: Due to these changes, border officials can cancel documents such as electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs).
Indian students Study Permits: Canada has made some changes to its immigration rules, which can affect thousands of Indian students, workers and tourists. Now the officials have got more power to cancel study and work permits in certain situations.
These new rules have come into effect from 31 January 2025. Along with this, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program has also been discontinued at the end of 2024. The SDS program used to process students’ visas quickly, as they had to show money in advance like Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) for tuition fees and living expenses.
Due to these changes, border officials can cancel documents such as electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs).
This is a matter of concern for many Indians, as Canada is a popular destination for Indian students going abroad for higher education. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), about 4,27,000 Indian students are currently studying in Canada. Canada also issued 3,65,750 visitor visas to Indians between January and July 2024.
Visas can be canceled in these situations
- If false information is provided, if there is a criminal record, or if there is death.
- If the officer believes that the person will not leave Canada after his stipulated period.
- If the document is lost, stolen, damaged or issued due to administrative error.
- If the temporary resident becomes a permanent resident.
- If a student’s work or study visa is cancelled.
- According to a report, the new rules may result in the cancellation of about 7,000 additional temporary resident visas, work permits and study permits.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has said that the affected people will be notified through their IRCC account or email.
If a student, worker or migrant’s visa is cancelled, they will be stopped at the time of entry and sent back to their country.
If someone’s permit is cancelled and he is already studying, working or living in Canada, he will be given a notice to leave the country by a specified date.
