In the meeting of Tata Trust held in Mumbai on 11 October, the decision to make Noel Tata the chairman of the trust has been taken unanimously. Noel will replace his half brother Ratan Tata.
Ratan Tata never married, had no children and had not named any successor for the Tata Trusts. The decision to appoint Noel Tata as chairman was taken keeping in mind Ratan Tata’s vision of ‘moving forward continuously’. Describing Noel as a ‘very good and sensible person’, former Tata Sons board member R Gopalakrishnan said he will do great for the trust. He said, ‘With his business and entrepreneurial skills, Noel will be able to add a lot of value to the Tata Trusts.’
Which positions has Noel Tata held?
Noel Tata has been the chairman of Trent Ltd since 2014. Trent is the Tata Group’s highly successful apparel retailer, with shares rising more than 6,000% over the past decade. Noel previously led Tata International Ltd from 2010 to 2021, during which time the commodity trading firm’s revenue grew from $500 million to over $3 billion. Noel Tata is also on the boards of several listed Tata companies, including Tata Steel Ltd and Voltas Ltd. According to the Tata Trusts website, his children – Maya, Neville and Leia – are also trustees of some of the family-linked charitable organisations.

All three children of Noel Tata are currently handling different responsibilities in the Tata Group. 34-year-old Maya Tata has played roles in Tata Opportunities Fund and Tata Digital. She contributed significantly in the launch of Tata New App. 32-year-old Neville Tata is leading the major hypermarket chain Star Bazaar in Tata Trent Limited. At the same time, 39-year-old Lia Tata is looking after the hospitality sector of the Tata Group. She is handling Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces. She also oversees the Indian Hotel Company.
