Google’s ‘Nearby Share’ feature is very similar to Apple’s airdrop feature
Users will get three visibility options like ‘all’, ‘some’ and ‘hidden’

Google will soon launch its file sharing feature ‘Nearby Share’ on the lines of Apple Airdrop in the next few weeks. The company has said that with the ‘Nearby Share’ feature, Android device users will be able to share heavy files, pictures, videos and links among themselves. However, it will work in devices running Android 6 or the latest Android version. This feature has also been made available for some Pixel devices and Samsung, but the company is now preparing to roll it out on a larger scale.

Will act like Apple’s airdrop feature

Google’s ‘Nearby Share’ feature is very similar to Apple’s AirDrop feature. The Airdrop feature allows iPhone users to share heavy files, pictures, videos and more by tapping on the Airdrop button. This feature allows the Apple device to easily transfer files after they are paired together. In AirDrop, you can choose the visibility option to prevent any unknown user from sending files to your phone. Similarly in Android’s Nearby feature, you have to turn on the Nearby Share button and then wait for the Nearby device to arrive in your zone.

Looking at security, there will be three visibility options

For security, the Nearby Share feature allows users to choose their visibility. Users will get three visibility options like ‘all’, ‘some’ and ‘hidden’. If the user selects the ‘all’ option, then you will be visible to all contacts and users in your area by turning on Nearby Share. However, if you select ‘some’, you will only appear to select the contact and if you choose ‘hidden’, you will not be visible to any Android user.
When a person tries to send a file to a user with the help of the Nearby feature, you will get the option to accept or reject his request. To use this feature, you will not need an internet connection. To send or receive files, both the users’ devices should have the Nearby Share feature.

Apple will also be able to share files from Android device to Chromebook, just like AirDrop, Apple iPhone users can share files with MacBook. Similarly, Android’s Nearby Share feature will facilitate sharing between Android phones and Chromebooks in the coming months. Now that Google is slowly rolling out the feature for some Android users, it will take some time to make sharing between Android phones and Chromebooks possible but it will certainly happen in the coming months. A Google spokesperson had said that Google is planning to try to extend this feature to other platforms in the future.

The Nearby feature will only work between Android devices.
However, remember that the Nearby Share feature will only work between Android devices, so don’t try to send files to the iPhone using the feature.
