On 7 January 2025, Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of a very special scheme called “Cashless Treatment” for road accident victims across the country. The objective of this scheme is to provide immediate and effective medical assistance to the accident victims. Let us tell you that this scheme was first started as a pilot project in Chandigarh on 14 March 2024. After its success there, it was implemented in states like Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry. Now after the success in these states, it has been decided to implement this scheme across the country by March.

People’s opinion on cashless treatment scheme

There is a wave of happiness among the common people due to this decision of the Union Minister. Manjeet Patel, a resident of Mirzapur in the district, says that whether it is a city or a village, people from every area are getting into accidents due to high speed and heavy vehicles. Most people lose their lives due to not getting proper treatment at the right time after the accident. Apart from this, due to lack of proper treatment due to lack of money, many times the victim also becomes permanently disabled. All these problems can be solved when the cashless treatment scheme is started.

Cashless treatment, expenses up to Rs 1.5 lakh covered

Let us tell you that this scheme provides financial assistance to the victims of road accidents for hospitalization and treatment. This scheme will be applicable in hospitals registered under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. After the accident, the victims will get free treatment for 07 days. Under this, expenses up to Rs 1.5 lakh will be covered.

Compensation of Rs 2 lakh on death in road accident

To implement this scheme, the National Health Authority, Police, Hospital and State Health Authority will work together. For this, an IT platform has been developed, which connects e-detailed accident report and transaction management system. This scheme has been prepared to provide fast and effective treatment to the victim as soon as possible after the accident. It is worth noting that there is also a provision to give a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the victim in case of death in hit and run cases.

This is how you will get the benefit of the scheme

Let us tell you that a list of registered hospitals will be issued by the Central Government, in which the accident victim will have to be admitted to get the benefit of the scheme. Within 24 hours of admission, the police will have to be informed about it, along with complete information about the accident and details of the current condition of the victim. After doing this, the documentation of the victim will be done in the hospital, in which the police report and the identity card of the victim will have to be submitted. Keep in mind that if the accident is not reported to the police within 24 hours, the benefit of the cashless treatment scheme will not be available.
