What is TDS

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is a part of Income Tax. Actually, the tax collected on the source of income of a person is called TDS. TDS is deducted on different types of income sources such as salary, interest or commission received on any investment etc. The government collects tax through TDS. However, it does not apply to every income and transaction. Some rules have been set by the Income Tax Department for deducting TDS.

The TDS deducted from all the income sources is deposited with the government. In return, you also get a certificate in which it is told how much TDS was deducted from a particular person and how much amount went into the government account. If TDS is more than the income tax, refund is claimed and if it is less, advance tax or self-assessment tax has to be deposited.
