PAN CARD has become a very important document in today’s time and if you have to file your Income Tax Return (ITR), then it is not possible to do it without this document i.e. PAN Card. But do you know that PAN card can also be made for minors i.e. those below 18 years of age. Yes, you heard it right, PAN card can be made even for a teenager. However, no minor is allowed to apply for PAN card on his own and for this only the parents of the child have to apply for PAN card.

According to the rules, there is no limit for filing ITR in India. If a minor earns more than Rs 15,000 per month then he can also file ITR. It is very important to have PAN card to file ITR. Therefore, the Income Tax Department has not set any specific age for making a PAN card.

Know in which situations a minor needs PAN card

  • When you invest in your child’s name.
  • When you make your child a nominee in your investments.
  • When you want to open a bank account in the name of your child.
  • When the minor earns.

Who can apply for making PAN Card?

Application for making PAN card of a minor can be made on behalf of his parents or whoever is the legal guardian of the child. It is also the responsibility of the guardian to file ITR on behalf of the child.

Meanwhile, the PAN card issued in the name of a minor does not have his photograph and signature, hence it cannot be used as identity proof. When the minor turns 18, he has to apply to update his PAN card.

Know how to apply for PAN card

Step 1: Go to the official website of NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited).
Step 2: Read all the instructions carefully to fill Form 49A.
Step 3: Upload other necessary documents including age certificate of the minor and photographs of parents. Upload only the signature of the parents.
Step 4: After paying the fee of Rs 107 for making PAN card, click on the submit button. After this you will get a receipt number, which can be used further to know the status of the application.

After applying for PAN card, you will receive a confirmation on your email and the PAN card will reach your registered address within 15 days of completion of verification.

Documents required to apply for PAN card of a minor

  • Proof of date of birth (DOB) of the minor
  • Proof of address and identity of the minor’s parents
  • Proof of address and identity of the applicant is also required
  • Any document like Aadhar card, ration card, passport, driving license of the minor’s parents can be used as identity proof.
  • For address proof, you can use any document like Aadhar Card, Post Office Passbook, Property Registration, Domicile Certificate etc.
