Passport Documents List: If you are going to the passport service center for passport processing, then along with the original documents, you will also have to submit a self-attested photocopy of them. Keep in mind, every information should be given by you absolutely correct.
Passport is the most important document for traveling abroad. Without this, you cannot apply for a visa. The passport is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs. You can also apply for it online. If you also feel the need to get a passport or you are going to travel abroad and you do not have a passport, then you can apply for it. Before this, you will have to work on your documents. That is, you will have to prepare the relevant documents, only then you will be able to apply. Let us understand here which documents you should have.
List of documents for new passport in India
- Aadhaar Card
- Any of the following documents as address proof
- Photocopy of passbook of active bank account in any public sector bank, private sector
- Bank or regional rural banks
- Water bill/electricity bill
- Election photo identity card
- Landline or postpaid mobile bill
- Proof of gas connection
- Photocopy of spouse’s passport (first and last page of passport containing family details and applicant’s name as spouse of the passport holder)
- Certificate from employer of reputed companies on letterhead
- Age proof School leaving certificate
- Birth certificate issued by Municipal Corporation or Registrar of Births and Deaths or any other prescribed authority empowered under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 in India
- Declaration by the head of child care home/orphanage on official letterhead confirming the date of birth of the applicant.

Any of the following documents as birth certificate
Policy bond issued by public life insurance corporations/organizations bearing the applicant’s date of birth. Proof of applicant’s service record (in case of government employees) or pay pension order (retired government employees) duly verified/certified by the officer/in-charge of the administration of the applicant’s concerned ministry/department. Driving license and PAN card. Election photo identity card.
If it is a case of marriage, divorce and separation
- If the applicant is married or wants to add the name of the spouse in the passport, then the marriage certificate or a joint photo declaration signed by both the husband and wife as per Annexure ‘J’ is required.
- If the name of the spouse is to be removed, then there should be divorce order/decree papers. If the name of the spouse is to be changed, then the death certificate of the name of the first spouse and remarriage certificate or a joint photo declaration signed by both the husband and wife as per Annexure ‘J’ is required.
- For change of surname by female applicants after marriage/divorce, marriage certificate or joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife as per Annexure ‘J’ is required. Divorce order/decree (if name/surname change is based on divorce) may be required. In case of complete change of name after marriage, standard name change procedure should be followed.
If applicant is a minor
According to the official website of Passport Seva, it is assumed that consent of both parents is available, unless specified. For minor applicants, current address proof document in the name of parents can be submitted. If parents have passport, it is advisable to carry original and self-attested copy of parent’s passport to the Passport Seva Kendra. For minor applicants, the documents can be verified by the parents. Minor applicants are eligible for non-ECR (Non Immigration Check Required) till they attain the age of 18 years.
ECR/ECNR
ECR means Immigration Check Required and ECNR means No Immigration Check Required. ECR status will be printed in the passport of applicants falling under ECR category. For those falling under non-ECR category, there will be no special mention in the passport. The practice of affixing non-ECR (earlier ECNR) stamp has been discontinued.
