An American firm has claimed that Aadhaar and passport related data of 81.5 crore Indians has been leaked on the dark web and an attempt has been made to sell it.

Aadhaar Data Leak: A big case of Aadhaar leak has come to light on the dark web. According to the report of Business Standard, American company Resecurity claims that Aadhaar and passport related data of 81.5 crore Indians has been leaked on the dark web. The report said that an attempt was made to sell information related to name, phone number, address, Aadhaar and passport online.

The American firm has written in its post that on October 9, a person ‘pwn0001’ shared a post on the breach forum. He gave information related to access to Aadhaar and passport related records of 81.5 crore Indians and tried to sell it. According to the security report, the person had offered to sell the information related to Aadhaar and passport for 80 thousand dollars.

According to media reports, the current data leak may be from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Business Standard reported that ICMR has not yet given any reply on this. Reports say that CBI is investigating this data leak discovered by pwn0001.

Hacker on X has also informed that India’s biggest data leak is that hackers have leaked the private data of more than 80 crore Indians. The leaked data contains information about name, father’s name, phone number, passport number, Aadhaar number and age. However, till now there has been no response from the government on this data leak issue.

Similarly, in August, another person named Lucius had offered to sell 1.8 terabytes of data on the breach forum. According to a Brookings report in April 2022, the Comptroller and Auditor General had investigated UIDAI and found that the authority did not effectively regulate its customer vendors and protect the security of their data vaults.

It is noteworthy that even before this a case of data leak had come to light. In June, the government had launched an investigation after personal data of vaccinated citizens, including VVIPs, from the CoWin website was allegedly leaked through a Telegram messenger channel.
