Pension Rule Changed: Union Minister Jitendra Singh has announced the new pension rules. Read in detail who will get the benefit now.
Pension Rule Changed: The government has made a major change in the pension rules with the intention of giving more financial security to women facing challenging circumstances. Now a divorced or separated daughter can directly claim her deceased father’s pension without waiting for the legal decision. Apart from this, if a woman has filed a case for divorce, then she can nominate her children for family pension instead of her husband.
Announcing these changes (Pension New Rules), Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that we have taken decisive steps to ensure that women do not have to struggle for their rightful pension. These reforms remove bureaucratic hurdles and provide immediate financial relief.
A look at the changes
A divorced or separated daughter can claim her deceased father’s pension without waiting for a court verdict. If divorce proceedings are initiated while the pensioner is alive, the woman will be eligible for benefits.
If a woman pensioner files a case for divorce or has initiated proceedings under laws protecting women from domestic violence or dowry harassment, she can nominate her children for family pension instead of her husband.
If a childless widow remarries, she can still continue to receive her deceased husband’s pension. But during this time her income should be less than the minimum pension limit.
These measures are aimed at enhancing financial security of women by removing legal uncertainties. Apart from pension security, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has launched several initiatives to support women in government service:
1. Child Care Leave: Single mothers can avail leave for up to two years in phases, including foreign travel with children.
2. Maternity Benefits: Now paid leave is given even in case of miscarriage and stillbirths.
