The Modi government has renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the most outstanding honor given in the field of sports. PM Modi tweeted about this and said that in view of the sentiments of the people, this award is now being named after Major Dhyan Chand.

Addressing the countrymen, PM Modi wrote in a tweet, ‘Amidst the moments that have made the country proud, the request of many countrymen has also come to the fore that the name of Khel Ratna Award should be dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand ji. Considering the sentiments of the people, it is now being renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Along with this, in another tweet, PM Modi said, “We are all overwhelmed by the great efforts of Indian players in the Olympic Games. Especially the willpower shown by our sons and daughters in hockey. The zeal shown towards victory is a great inspiration for the present and future generations.


Let me tell you, Major Dhyan Chand, popularly known as the ‘magician’ of hockey, has made an incredible contribution to hockey. Which even today the young generation appreciates every citizen of the country. Major Dhyan Chand scored a total of 13 goals in his last Olympics (Berlin 1936). In this way Dhyan Chand scored a total of 39 goals in Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Berlin Olympics, which describes his rejuvenated image.
