Government holidays on November 12, 13 and 15:

November 12: Igas Festival

Location: Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

Holiday: Schools, colleges, offices, and banks will remain closed in Uttarakhand.

Igas Festival, also known as Budhi Diwali, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It is celebrated on Ekadashi of Kartik month, eleven days after Diwali and is a tradition to celebrate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya. According to local beliefs, when Diwali was being celebrated in Ayodhya on the victory of Lord Rama, the news was delayed in reaching the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand, so the people here celebrated Diwali eleven days later. On the day of Igas, lamps are lit in homes and villages, the traditional dance ‘Chholiya’ is performed, and special dishes such as ‘Singal’ and ‘Bada’ are prepared.

November 13: South Assembly Elections

Location: Raipur, Chhattisgarh

Holiday: Private and government schools and banks (Banks will remain closed for polling on November 12 as well)

November 15: Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti

Location: Punjab, Chandigarh, and other states

Holiday: Schools, colleges, banks, and offices will remain closed

Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, is celebrated with great reverence and gaiety on the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first guru and founder of Sikhism. The day falls on Kartik Purnima and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Sikh community as well as people of other religions in India. On this occasion, kirtans and bhajans are performed in gurdwaras, and the Akhand Paath of Guru Granth Sahib is performed. Nagar Kirtan is organized early in the morning, in which the Sangat propagates the teachings of Guru Nanak Ji. Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave the message of unity, equality and love to the society and preached against caste, religion and discrimination in his speech.
