Rain: Heavy rain in many parts of Andhra-Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru; Schools closed, many trains and flights cancelled

Heavy rains in Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu completely disrupted life. From colonies to roads, knee-deep water filled the place. Road, train and air transport systems came to a standstill. Many trains and flights had to be cancelled. 

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the state for the next two days and said that the low pressure area has turned into a depression and it is likely to pass through the Chennai coast on the morning of October 17.

Bus services were disrupted in various parts of the state, including Chennai city. Southern Railway announced cancellation of four express trains, including the Chennai Central-Mysore Kaveri Express, and diversion of several others. Many domestic flights had to be cancelled as waterlogged roads could not make it to the airport in sufficient numbers.

Following the IMD warning, the state government has declared a holiday in all schools, colleges and government offices except essential services in Chennai, Tiruvalur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpet districts on October 16. Relief camps have been set up in various districts under the supervision of senior IAS officers.

Heavy rain in Bangalore too

Heavy rains in various parts of the state including Karnataka’s capital Bangalore also affected life. Traffic system collapsed due to waterlogging in many areas. Schools and colleges in Puducherry have also been declared holiday on October 16.

Schools and colleges will remain closed in Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has announced the closure of schools in Bengaluru City District due to the forecast of heavy rains. Bengaluru Urban District Collector Jagadeesh ordered and announced a holiday for Anganwadi centers, government and private schools in all taluks of the city. Since there is a government holiday on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, schools will also remain closed in the state on October 17.

Schools, colleges will also remain closed in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

All schools and colleges will remain closed tomorrow i.e. on October 16 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal regions after the Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains in the coming days. In view of the forecast of heavy rains, the Tamil Nadu State Government has declared a holiday for schools, colleges and government offices except essential services on October 16 for the coastal districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpet.

The Tamil Nadu government in its advisory has asked private establishments to provide ‘work from home’ option to their employees. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said that the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low pressure area on October 15 and is likely to intensify into a depression.

Heavy rains in many parts of Andhra

At the same time, many parts of Andhra Pradesh received heavy rains due to the movement of low pressure area from west to northwest over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The Meteorological Department also said that the weather system is located in the southwest Bay of Bengal at 5.30 pm today, about 490 km east to southeast of Chennai and 590 km southeast of Nellore. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the coasts of North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Nellore close to Chennai as a pressure on the morning of October 17.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at some places in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, with extremely heavy rainfall at some isolated places. Strong winds up to 60 kmph (km/h) are likely over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, including the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh till October 17.

Monsoon departs from entire India

The southwest monsoon has completely departed from India. According to the Meteorological Department, the arrival of the northeast monsoon has started in southeastern peninsular India. The country recorded 934.8 mm of rain during the monsoon season as against the normal 868.6 mm, the highest since 2020.
