Rs 2000 Note: The Reserve Bank has said that even though Rs 2000 notes have been taken out of normal transactions, it still remains legal tender. Although more than 97 percent of the notes have returned to the system, notes worth Rs 9 thousand crores are still left in the system.

New Delhi. After the year 2016, the Reserve Bank once again announced to close the currency in 2023. However, this time there was no commotion and the demonetised notes have almost returned to the banks. This time, the Reserve Bank had taken out the Rs 2,000 note from circulation and given the option to deposit it in banks or exchange it till September 30. Now on the first day of the new year i.e. January 1, 2024, RBI has once again mentioned the notes of Rs 2000.

The Reserve Bank issued a statement on Monday saying that Rs 2,000 notes still remain legal tender. These notes have not been rendered useless. However, their general circulation has been stopped and they can be exchanged or deposited only by visiting the regional offices of the Reserve Bank across the country. Apart from this, people can send Rs 2,000 notes from any post office to any RBI office through India Post to deposit in their bank accounts.

How many notes have returned to the system so far

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Monday that about 97.38 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have so far returned to the banking system and now only Rs 9,330 crore of notes are left with the people. On May 19 last year, RBI had announced the withdrawal of notes worth Rs 2,000 from circulation.

How much money was there in the market

The total value of Rs 2,000 notes, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, has now come down to Rs 9,330 crore at the close of business on December 29, 2023, the RBI said. In this way, on May 19, 2023, 97.38 percent of the total Rs 2,000 notes in circulation have returned to the banking system.

What was the deadline to return?

While withdrawing these notes from circulation, RBI had given the option to exchange them or deposit them in bank accounts till September 30. Later the deadline was extended till October 7. From October 8, people can exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes by visiting 19 RBI offices. Because of this, a good crowd is seen in these offices during working hours.

Where are the RBI offices?

These offices of RBI are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. In November 2016, after discontinuing the existing notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, RBI had issued a note of Rs 2,000.
