New Delhi : Many types of questions keep roaming in our mind regarding the notes lying in the purse and pockets. Many times while taking a note, doubt remains whether it is fake or not? The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) keeps sharing details to differentiate between genuine and fake notes. But still there are some such questions, which keep running in our mind. Suppose you have two notes of 500 rupees and both have the same serial number. In such a situation, will that note be considered fake or valid? Let us know what the Reserve Bank says about this.

The responsibility of issuing currency in the country rests with the Reserve Bank of India. According to section 22 of the Act, the Reserve Bank has the right to issue notes in India. Section 25 states that the design, form and content of the notes shall be subject to the approval of the Central Government after consideration of the recommendations of the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India.

Now the basic question is that if two notes have the same serial number, will they be considered valid? In this regard, the Reserve Bank of India says that yes, it is possible that two or more bank notes may have the same serial number, but either they have different inset letters or different printing years or different Governors of the Reserve Bank of India. Must be signed. An inset letter is a character printed on the number panel of a banknote.

Notes can also be without any inset letter.

The Reserve Bank of India used to give numbers to the bank notes issued till August 2006. Each of these bank notes was given a unique serial number starting with a number or letter/s. These bank notes are issued in the form of packets of 100 pieces.

If suppose a note is not in payable condition, then you can exchange it by going to any bank branch. Recipient banks keep such notes with them and send them to the Reserve Bank of India where they are destroyed.

Bank notes withdrawn from circulation are accepted at the Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank of India. The Reserve Bank, inter alia, verifies these bank notes and after all kinds of tests separate the unfit notes and put them in the category of destruction.
