RCB New Captain: Big announcement before IPL, Rajat Patidar will be the new captain of RCB, check details

RCB New Captain in IPL 20225; Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Thursday announced their captain for IPL 2025 in Bengaluru. In the upcoming IPL season, the command of this franchise has been given to Madhya Pradesh star batsman Rajat Patidar. Earlier there was also discussion about the name of Virat Kohli.

RCB New Captain in IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bangalore has made a major reshuffle before the start of IPL 2025. Royal Challengers Bangalore has confirmed the new captain of IPL. Rajat Patidar has become the new captain of the team.

Earlier the frontrunner for this post was Virat Kohli, who led the franchise from 2013 to 2021. He was also the captain for three matches in IPL 2023.

Rajat Patidar has been with RCB since 2021 and was one of their three retained players ahead of the mega auction in November. Patidar, 31, was the captain of his state team Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the 2024-25 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Virat Kohli was the captain of RCB between 2013 and 2021. Faf du Plessis took over after him. But RCB released du Plessis, who was their captain from 2022 to 2024, ahead of last year’s mega auction. Du Plessis, 40, will play for Delhi Capitals this season.

Rajat Patidar will be the 8th captain of RCB. Earlier, Rahul Dravid (14), Kevin Pietersen (6), Anil Kumble (35), Daniel Vettori (28), Virat Kohli (143), Shane Watson (3) and Faf du Plessis (42) have handled the captaincy.

Rajat Patidar (Rs 11.00 crore) was among the players retained by RCB ahead of the auction. He has experience of leading Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMT) and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Patidar led Madhya Pradesh to the SMT 2024/25 final, where the team lost to Mumbai by 5 wickets. He was also the second-highest run-scorer after Ajinkya Rahane (469), scoring 428 runs in 10 matches at an average of 61.14 and a strike rate of 186.08.

Rajat Patidar has so far scored 799 runs in 27 IPL matches at an average of 34.74. His strike rate is 158.85. Patidar’s highest score has been 112*. Apart from a century, he has scored 7 half-centuries. Talking about his international career, he has represented India in 3 Tests and one ODI.

RCB did not bid for Faf…

RCB needed a new captain after not retaining Faf du Plessis, who led them for three years from 2022 to 2024. They did not bid for the 40-year-old du Plessis in the auction and he was sold to Delhi Capitals at the base price.

Du Plessis, in turn, took over the captaincy from Kohli, who ended his nine-season stint as RCB captain in 2021.

Kohli has captained RCB in 143 matches…

Kohli has led RCB in 143 matches in the IPL, the second-most for a captain after MS Dhoni. His record stands at 68 wins and 71 losses with four no-results. While RCB are yet to win the IPL, Kohli led them to the final in 2016, a season in which he scored a record 973 runs. He was also the top scorer in IPL 2024, with his 741 runs at a strike rate of 154.69 playing a key role in RCB’s late entry into the playoffs, where they lost the eliminator.

Apart from RCB, these teams are also looking for captaincy….
Apart from RCB, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are the other teams that have not announced their captains for the upcoming season. Last year’s KKR captain Shreyas Iyer will lead Punjab Kings this year, while former Delhi captain Rishabh Pant will now lead Lucknow Super Giants.
