Retirement Age Increase 2025: Government increased retirement age by 2 years, now job will be completed at 62? know what is the truth

A viral post on social media claims that the government has decided to increase the retirement age of central government employees by 2 years, from the current age of 60 to 62 years, as it will help reduce pension costs. Is there any truth in this?

Retirement Age Increase 2025: The retirement age of central government employees in India is 60 years. After this, they get pension for their many years of service. The central government spends more than 3 percent of India’s gross domestic product on government pensions, paying Rs 9.6 trillion on pensions in FY24.

A viral post on social media claims that the government has decided to increase the retirement age of central government employees by 2 years, from the current age of 60 to 62 years, as it will help reduce pension costs. Is there any truth in this?

Around November last year, a post with a notice titled ‘Retirement Age Increase 2024’ went viral on social media. It claimed that the move was aimed at benefiting “lakhs of employees” and improving administrative efficiency.

However, the claim was refuted by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), which is the official government agency responsible for disseminating factual information. After verification, it was found that the message circulating on social media is far from the truth. On November 19, 2024, PIB issued a clarification.

PIB posted on Twitter “A news going viral on social media claims that the Government of India has decided to increase the retirement age of Central Government employees by 2 years. This claim is fake.

  • The Indian government has not taken any such decision
  • ⚠ Do not share news without verifying it.”
  • The government agency also urged citizens to rely only on credible, official sources to verify news and policy announcements.

Retirement age raised to 62?

No, there has been no such announcement so far. The Modi government denied this claim once again in December. In a written reply to a question about any plan to revise the retirement age of employees, Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh said, “There is no such proposal under consideration of the government.”
