Rice Price: Due to the efforts of Modi government, the price of non-Basmati rice is likely to come down. Along with the prices of rice, the prices of pulses will also decrease. The prices of rice have increased by 12 percent in the last two years.
The Modi government at the Center has started efforts to curb the price of non-Basmati rice in the domestic market. The government has instructed rice industry associations to bring down the prices to the lowest level. Due to this, the price of rice is likely to reduce. Along with the prices of rice, the prices of pulses will also decrease. The prices of rice have increased by 12 percent in the last two years.
In view of this, Food and Public Distribution Department Secretary Sanjeev Chopra held a meeting with key representatives of the processing industry of non-Basmati rice and asked them to take measures to bring the prices to a reasonable level. He advised the industry associations to hold a meeting with their members and ensure that the retail prices are reduced with immediate effect. Also discussed was the reason for increase in rice prices despite good harvest and export ban and stressed on strictly dealing with profiteering.
Adequate stock of good quality rice
Food Corporation of India (FCI) informed the rice processing industry that there is adequate stock of good quality rice. It is being sold through Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) at a reserve price of Rs 29 per kg. Under the Open Market Sale Scheme, traders can buy rice from FCI and sell it to consumers at a reasonable profit margin.
Supply to Asia and Africa
India has been supplying rice to its strategic partners in Asia and Africa since the export of broken variety and non-Basmati white rice was banned in September 2022 and July 2023. This restriction has been imposed to control prices. In recent months, the central government has also approved the export of 2.77 million tonnes (MT) of non-Basmati white rice to 14 major Asian and African countries, including Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Toor dal will also be cheaper
Due to improvement in availability of pulses and reduced demand, the price of tur dal will decrease by more than 18 percent by February. Toor dal was being sold at Rs 160 per kg in November. Now due to reduction in price the price will become Rs 130 per kg. Prices have increased since last year due to reduction in production.
On December 18, the price fell by Rs 2.5. Actually, pulses are being imported from Mozambique, Canada, Russia and Australia. The government has also removed the minimum import prices and port restrictions on December 8 itself, so that the prices can fall.
