Road Transport Ministry: Right now, changing the mobile number and applying for a new DL is the easiest way to avoid penalty and action. Recently, Union Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar hinted at this proposed step in a conference organized on road safety.

Road Transport Ministry: If the old address or mobile number is still registered on your car’s RC or your DL, then now it will have to be changed. Yes, the Road Transport Ministry is preparing to bring a new rule. Now any vehicle owner and DL holder will have to update their address, mobile number and other information. The purpose of this step is to prevent rule breakers from getting away without punishment and avoiding fines. The Transport Ministry is considering making it a part of the proposed amendment in the Motor Vehicle Act.

Those who break the rules will not be able to escape

According to the news published in TOI, an official said, ‘There should be a system to track people who repeatedly break the rules. Such people pose a danger to others while walking on the road. Right now, changing the mobile number and applying for a new DL is the easiest way to avoid penalty and action. Recently, Union Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar hinted at this proposed step in a conference organized on road safety.

E-challans worth more than Rs 12,000 crore are pending

He said, ‘E-challans worth more than Rs 12,000 crore are pending. Actually, the database through which we are implementing the e-challan system is not updated. Therefore, we need to clean the database and make it more perfect. Umashankar said that some DLs and vehicle registration certificates (RC) on the Sarathi and Vahan database may be from the 1960s and 70s, and 1980s and 90s. The old database does not have mobile and Aadhaar numbers. The correct address may also not be there, which means that we need to think of some points where it is necessary for vehicle owners or license holders to update their details.

He said that this will help the government know which person to contact and where. If a person’s e-challan fine is not paid on time, his DL or RC can be cancelled. Also, his insurance can also become expensive.
