Mumbai Seat Belt Penalty: There is important news for Mumbaikars. Mumbai Police has issued a notice stating that all passengers traveling in a car will have to wear seat belts from now on. This rule is coming into effect from tomorrow i.e. 1st November 2022. Those who violate this rule will be fined.
According to the information received, every person traveling in a motor vehicle in Mumbai will be required to wear a seat belt from Tuesday. If a person fails to comply with this rule, he will be fined Rs 1,000 as per the Motor Vehicle Act.
The Mumbai Police has also clarified in the notice that vehicles which do not have a rear seat belt will have to get it fitted before November 1, 2022, on a priority basis. That is, from tomorrow, all car drivers and passengers in Mumbai will be required to wear seat belts while traveling. Otherwise action will be taken against them.
What does the law say?
A provision has been made to impose a fine of Rs 1,000 for not wearing a seatbelt for the passengers sitting in the back seat legally. It is a different matter that till now people are either not aware about this provision made under Rule 138(III) of Motor Vehicles Act or it is being ignored.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said a few months ago that the government has asked vehicle companies to offer three-point seat belts for the safety of the people in the vehicles. He had said that even the person sitting in the middle of the back seat will have to give a seat belt.
Questions were raised by the death of Cyrus Mistry
If the legal provision of wearing seat belts even for the passengers in the back seat of the car had been strictly followed, then perhaps the former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry and his friends would be alive today. Mistry and his friend Jehangir Pandole were killed in a car accident on September 4 this year in Palghar, Maharashtra. Since this incident, the government has been trying to tighten the safety provisions in vehicles to bring down the deaths in road accidents.
