SIM Card Blocking:: In many cases thousands of mobile connections i.e. SIM cards were used in the same handset.
SIM Card Blocking: Telecom companies are going to stop about 18 lakh mobile connections simultaneously. According to officials, these SIM cards are being disconnected by the Central Government as part of the process to curb cyber criminals involved in illegal activities. Various law enforcement agencies have conducted intensive investigation to identify these mobile numbers. These mobile numbers are related to cybercrime and financial fraud.
The Economic Times, quoting an official, has said in its report that during the investigation, it was found that in many cases thousands of mobile connections i.e. SIM cards were used in a single handset.
On May 9, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had ordered telecom companies to disconnect 28,220 mobile numbers. Also, instructions were given to check more than 20 lakh mobile connections associated with such handsets.
Economic Times quoted the official as saying, ‘Generally we found that in such cases only 10 percent of the connections are verified and the remaining numbers are disconnected because they do not pass the reverification process.’ Once the reverification process is completed within a few days, disconnection will begin.
In view of the increasing crime committed by mobile phones across the country, this step has been taken by the government. According to the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), in the year 2023, the people of the country had lost Rs 10,139 crore due to digital financial fraud. According to the report of a parliamentary standing committee on finance, more than 6,94,000 complaints related to digital fraud were received in the year 2023.
