SIM Card New Rule:Â The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reduced the waiting period for porting mobile number after SIM swap from 10 days to 7 days. This step has been taken amid increasing phone number frauds across the country. This rule will be implemented from July 1.
The regulator said in a press release, ‘Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024 on March 14, 2024, which will come into force from July 1, 2024.’
How will cyber crime be reduced?
With the new regulation, TRAI has added an additional criteria for rejecting the allocation request of Unique Porting Code (UPC). The regulator said that if the request for UPC is made before the expiry of seven days from the date of SIM swap/placement, then UPC will not be allocated. TRAI said in its release that these amendments are aimed at curbing the porting of mobile numbers through fraudulent SIM swap/replacement by scammers.
Let us tell you that recently, the Telecommunication Act 2023 came into force. Apart from other changes, the new telecom law allows the government to take control of telecom operators in case of emergency.
Another big change coming with the new telecom law is that it allows people to register a maximum of nine cards in their name. However, for those living in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast states, a person will be able to buy a maximum of 6 SIM cards according to this law.
