SIM Cards: There is a big news for the mobile users of Bihar. SIM cards of lakhs of people are going to be closed. Taking major action on cyber crime, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has decided to close more than 27 lakh SIM cards in Bihar in the next 3 months. BSNL Patna officials informed that out of these 27 lakh SIM cards, more than 3 lakh belong to government telecom companies, while more than 24 lakh have been issued by private telecom companies.
Whose SIM will be closed?
DoT’s guidelines will apply to those customers who have more than 9 SIM cards. Such users will have to give information to their telecom company and choose 9 SIM cards which they want to keep active. If they do not do so, their 10th SIM card will be automatically closed. This step has been taken to stop the increasing cyber fraud in Bihar. According to officials, many people in the state have more than 9 SIM cards, many of which are used for fraud.
How is cyber fraud done through SIM?
Cyber criminals commit fraud by registering multiple SIM cards on the same identity, which makes it difficult to catch them. The government hopes that limiting the number of SIM cards will curb cyber crime. Telecom companies have been instructed to inform the affected users about this new rule. Under this, users will have to choose the 9 SIM cards they want to keep running. If they do not take this decision within 90 days, their 10th SIM will be automatically closed.
Most cyber crime in these districts
Many districts of Bihar, such as Nawada, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Gaya, Jamui, Lakhisarai and Munger, have become notorious for cyber crime. The criminals here are compared to the infamous Jamtara cyber fraud gang of Jharkhand. They dupe people using fake SIM cards, making Bihar one of the worst-affected states by digital fraud. This SIM regulation policy of the government will help reduce cyber crime, bring transparency in mobile connections and prevent misuse of multiple SIM cards for illegal activities.
