Vande Bharat: Western Railways is working on redeveloping sites where the next generation AC sleeper Vande Bharat semi-high speed trains can be maintained.

Sleeper Vande Bharat: After the chair car Vande Bharat trains, sleeper Vande Bharat trains are going to be launched soon in the country. Work for this is also going on at a fast pace. Now a new update has come out on this. In fact, Mumbai will not only get a new terminus at Jogeshwari but also a maintenance depot for the upcoming air-conditioned (AC) Vande Bharat sleeper trains. This will be the second depot after Wadi Bandar.

In the interim general budget, Western Railways received a token amount of Rs 20 lakh for the Rs 60 crore project of developing the depot, which is likely to be set up between Jogeshwari and Ram Mandir railway stations. Sources said the paperwork and other documentation has started. “Tenders to be invited this month are in preparation,” a Western Railway official said. Indian Railways had identified two locations – Mumbai Central and Jogeshwari. Sources said Jogeshwari would be better suited than Mumbai Central for the proposed maintenance depot due to availability of space. “This is in addition to developing a terminus at Jogeshwari,” a Western Railway official said. Vande Bharat trains will have separate washing lines designated for 10 trains. A new coaching terminus will also be built at Jogeshwari at a cost of Rs 69 crore. According to the plan, a 600 meter long and 12 meter wide platform will be built with tracks on both sides.

This rail terminus is also expected to provide convenience to passengers taking long distance trains to Gujarat. This will benefit people living or traveling in Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Vasai and parts of the north-western suburbs who do not need to travel to Mumbai Central, Dadar and Bandra Terminus. At the same time, at Wadi Bunder, Central Railway has started work to set up a facility for maintenance of AC sleeper Vande Bharat trains. Wadi Bunder Coaching Depot was built in 1882 and is now being revived to house and maintain Vande Bharat rakes. Apart from construction of sheds and rail lines, work has been done to establish eight lines at a cost of Rs 54 crore.
