New Delhi. On Thursday, the Ministry of Power has fixed the timeline for the installation of smart meters. The ministry has issued a deadline to replace existing electricity meters with smart meters with pre-payment facility in government offices, commercial establishments and industrial units, among others.
It has also been said in this notification that the State Electricity Commission can extend this deadline twice, for a maximum period of six months. However, they will also have to give proper reasons for this. Prepaid smart meters will be installed across the country by March 2025.

Ministry of Power has said that all government offices at block level and above, all industrial and commercial consumers should be supplied electricity through smart meters by December 2023. According to a notification issued by the ministry on Thursday, all consumers (other than agricultural users) in areas having communication network will be supplied electricity with smart meters working in pre-paid or pre-paid mode.
All Union Territories, Power Divisions having consumers more than 50 percent in urban areas having AT&C (total technical and commercial) loss of more than 15 percent in 2019-20, AT&C loss more than 25 percent in FY 2019-20 Other power divisions, all block and above level government offices and all industrial and commercial consumers will be connected to smart meters by December 2023.
