Speed Limit In India: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has fixed the speed of vehicles. These speeds are different for different categories of vehicles. But this limit can be increased soon.
New Delhi. On all roads across the country, whether it is Expressway, National Highway or village road, the speed of driving vehicles is fixed on all. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has fixed the speed of vehicles. These speeds are different for different categories of vehicles.
But this limit can be increased soon. Let us tell you that its proposal has been prepared with the government. The matter is likely to be discussed in the meeting of state transport ministers to be chaired by Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari later this month.
Private cars are allowed a speed limit of 120 kmph and 100 kmph on expressways and national highways, respectively, but taxis and cabs are limited to 80 kmph.
But now the government is looking to remove this distinction and instead of having separate norms for passenger cars and cabs/taxis, fix maximum speed limits for different types of roads based on the lane configuration.
Now this is the limit
The maximum speed limit currently set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for cars is 100 kmph on National Highways and 120 kmph on expressways. The speed limit on the Mumbai Pune Expressway is still 100 kmph.
Earlier in October last year, Gadkari had indicated to increase the speed limit on the expressway from 120 kmph to 140 kmph. He had said, ‘My personal view is that the speed limit of vehicles on the expressway should be increased to 140 km per hour.
The limit is folded according to the roads
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has divided the roads across the country into four categories. The first expressway, the second four-lane or more-lane road with dividers, the third municipal border roads and the fourth category other roads, including roads in rural areas.
Minister Gadkari had earlier said that the speed limit should be at least 100 kmph on four-lane roads on National Highways, while it should be 80 kmph and 75 kmph for 2-lane roads and city roads . He had said, ‘There are some decisions of the Supreme Court and the High Court regarding the speed of the car, due to which we are not able to do anything.
